Si bien la escritura multilingüe ha sido una práctica común desde la Antigüedad, solo recientemente se ha convertido en objeto de investigación de varios estudios críticos. Kellman, quien prefiere el término translingüismo, plantea que “la creación de una nueva voz lleva a la invención de un nuevo yo” (Kellman 2014, nuestra traducción). Muchos escritores, al igual que directores de cine, viven en un entorno diario multilingüe que les inspira para su obra creativa. Sin embargo, tal como lo plantea Yildiz en su libro Beyond the Mother Tongue, el multilingüismo sigue siendo acorralado por el ideal de una lengua materna única (Yildiz 2012). Además, según Lennon, resulta imposible realizar una literatura radicalmente plurilingüe en la práctica puesto que es algo que a las grandes editoriales no les interesa (Lennon 2010).
El objetivo de la jornada Políglotas y Polisistemas consiste en analizar el multilingüismo en la literatura y el cine desde diferentes perspectivas que permitan estudiar tanto el producto como el proceso. Codde, por ejemplo, considera que, aunque la teoría de los polisistemas parece haber perdido su atractivo entre estudiantes e investigadores de literatura comparada, el modelo interpretativo de Even-Zohar sigue ofreciendo “un marco para los amplios estudios temáticos de una gran variedad de fenómenos culturales” (Codde 2003, nuestra traducción). La jornada quiere reunir los conocimientos y las metodologías de los estudios de literatura, de cine y de traducción, y confrontarlos con nuevas perspectivas en el campo. Se valorarán también análisis de obras literarias y películas contemporáneas desde 2000 hasta hoy. Se enfocarán principalmente textos y películas en inglés y/o español.
La jornada Políglotas y Polisistemas es una co-organización de dos proyectos de investigación:
- “Vidas en traducción. Las paradojas de la escritura autobiográfica multilingüe hispanoamericana 1980-2015”, financiado por el Fondo de Investigación Científica de Flandes, co-dirigido por Ilse Logie, UGent y An Van Hecke, KULeuven, doctoranda: Sarah Staes.
- “Éxodocs. La representación de la migración de América Latina a los Estados Unidos: Los documentalistas como nuevos narradores de la frontera”, proyecto C1 financiado por la KU Leuven, co-dirigido por Inge Lanslots y An Van Hecke, doctoranda: Alexandra Sanchez. (éxodocs.com)

Multilingual writing has been a common practice since Antiquity, but has only become a popular research topic among critics in recent years. Kellman, who prefers the term translingualism, states that “the creation of a new voice means the invention of a new self” (2014). Many writers as well as film directors draw on their daily use of more than one language as a creative resource, but, as Yildiz points out in her authoritative essay Beyond the Mother Tongue, The Postmonolingual Condition, multilingualism is still haunted by the ideal of one true mother tongue (Yildiz 2012). Moreover, there is the material impossibility of a radically plurilingual literature because big publishing houses are not interested in it (Lennon 2010).
In the one-day conference, Polyglots and Polysystems, it is our aim to analyze multilingualism in literature and film from different perspectives through which both the product and the process can be approached. Codde, for instance, reminds us that, although Polysystem Theory seems to have lost its appeal for students and researchers of comparative literature, Even-Zohar’s interpretative model still offers a “framework for a wide-ranging and still topical study of a variety of cultural phenomena” (Codde 2003). The conference will bring together insights and methodologies from literary studies, film studies and translation studies, and confront these with new perspectives in the field. We also welcome case studies of contemporary literary works and films from 2000 until now. The main focus will be on texts and films in English and/or Spanish.
The conference Polyglots and Polysystems is a collaborative initiative of two research projects:
