Summary:
Within the framework of cultural transfer and translation, the ÉXODOCS research project aims to map the relatively recent surge of documentaries on Latin-American migration to the US. Alexandra’s research in particular focuses on the reach and prestige of documentaries broadcast by PBS on that topic. This Fall quarter, Alexandra has come to UC Santa Cruz to work with Associate Professor Jennifer Taylor of the Film & Digital Media Department on documentaries aired between 1988 and 2018 by POV, i.e. PBS’s longest-running showcase of independent documentaries. Thanks to the Research Center for the Americas and the LALS Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program, Alexandra is combing through 54 POV documentaries with 9 UCSC undergrads. During her talk, she will share some of her findings, thoughts, questions on the documentaries of her corpus and the message they convey.
Resumen:
El objetivo del proyecto de investigación ÉXODOCS es cartografiar el aumento relativamente reciente de documentales sobre la migración latinoamericana hacia los EE.UU. bajo el marco de la transferencia y traducción cultural. En particular, Alexandra investiga el alcance y prestigio de documentales sobre ese tema difundidos por PBS. Este trimestre de otoño, Alexandra vino a UC Santa Cruz para trabajar con la profesora asociada Jennifer Taylor del Film & Digital Media Department sobre documentales emitidos entre 1988 y 2018 por POV, la serie de documentales independientes más longeva de PBS. Gracias al Research Center for the Americas y el Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program de LALS, Alexandra está rastreando 54 documentales de POV con la ayuda de 9 estudiantes de pregrado de UC Santa Cruz. En su ponencia, Alexandra compartirá sus hallazgos, reflexiones, preguntas sobre los documentales de su corpus y el mensaje que transmiten.
